Photographer's Note
The church of Saint Jacob
under a very threatening sky
---
Probably my favourite circumstances for photography is when the sky turns deeply dark, yet the sun shines low and strong to light up the scenes below.
---
The SAINT-JACOBSKERK is one of the main churches of Antwerp. It was built in the troubled golden age of the city (from 1491 to 1656) largely in Brabant gothic style.
It is located near Antwerp's university district and functions as the main church for the university, as this branch of the university was founded by the Jesuits. There are other branches further away from the center without religious roots.
The Sint_Jacobs is also where our city's most famous baroque painter Pieter-Paul Rubens and his wife Helena lie buried.
--
THIS PICTURE is the view if you walk towards the university district from the Meir, which is our main shopping street.

Hello Benny,
I like that kind of light too, at least if I have my camera and feel sure I could get inside before the rain starts. The tightly packed buildings, with the church tower as the cherry on the cake, would have made an attractive composition under any circumstances but they benefit a lot from this light.
Best regards,
Gert

Hello Benny,
Looks like quite a few Belgian cities other than Bruges are worth a visit. Good graphism and sharpness with the old Gothic Tower of the church adding a strong focal point. Tfs!

Hi Benny,
Yes that is right!
These are probably the most favourable conditions you can wish for. As much as you can plan for the blue hour, it is really impossible to plan for a light like this.
You must be lucky to be in these brief moments in the right place.
Excellent quality work,
M

Hello Benny,
Though we prefer to have bright sunlight for our photographs, sometimes, darkness and foreboding work even better by creating a very strong atmosphere. This photograph has such an atmosphere, very moody and brooding!
The buildings appear shrugged and ready for the onslaught!
It's a well composed photograph, too.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)
