Photographer's Note

The building in the background is a brand new big one on the corner next to the BOZAR in Brussels. I don't like it and it has gotten a few very negative reviews in architecture columns (and probably also some praising it).

While we were on the sidewalk waiting for some friends to go and visit the Rinus Van de Velde exhibition at the BOZAR, I was mentioning this, when suddenly it struck me and given a blue sky and great sunlight, the combination of that big zebra crossing in front of the BOZAR and that ugly building...well, it did have something. That's when I took this picture.

BRUSSELS is the little known capital of Belgium. The name, for many people, is a synonym for centralized and anonymous power politics. That's just a true on a European as on a Belgian scale.

Brussels is Belgium's only really big city (relatively speaking) and is certainly its most international one. It is multilingual and can be hard to like.

For most Belgians, Brussels is a place they'd rather avoid or only visit "when necessary" but we love it, probalby for exactly the same reasons.

THIS PICTURE was shot in the Ravensteinstraat in Brussels' art district. The BOZAR (Palais des Beaux Arts / Paleis van Schone Kunsten) is just to the right outside of the frame.
