The beauty of a site is not necessarily a pledge of peace.
This bridge on Drina has a history very in charge of massacres (the last during the war of 1992-1995 several thousands of died according to various sources), tortures (on Hapjia the torturer of the Othomans decapitated, impaled...), but also of meetings and common life. It connects the occident to the East and is on a natural border which saw passing much from troops and populations.

War in Bosnia, one remembers especially names of cities, Sarajevo, Mostar, Bihac, Tuzla, Gorazde... and of a massacre, Srebrenica. But Visegrad, one does not remember. Because about Visegrad, the Western media never spoke about it. As if it had occurred nothing there. As if Visegrad had never existed. Visegrad however exists. It is a town of Eastern Bosnia, with a bridge. A bridge symbolic system and majestic. A bridge made famous for the novel of Ivo Andric. A bridge like an emblem, a pilori, a mausoleum... Like a testimony.
