Veliko Tarnovo from Museum, a photo from Veliko Tarnovo, West

Photographer's Note

It's not quite Positano on the Amalfi Coast, but this view of Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria with its many street levels and layers cascading down the steep cliffs reminded of that locale and Indian Hill towns. At top right you might be able to spot a wall with 3 figures on it. It's of the architect Kolyo Ficheto (1800 - 1881) offering his work to the city. No matter if you can't see it as I've loaded it as a workshop. Here's another nice view I found on internet with the wall in the center:

Interesting panoramic view with all these houses rising higgledy-piggledy up the hillside all different one from the other. Optimal technical realisation. Not Positano, but perhaps more down to earth.

This scenery reminded me of a similar view in Porto, Portugal, Chris.
Beautiful rural town sight, houses built on the slope and I can guess that each level presenting a different era.

Hello Chris,
Somewhere in that maze of narrow streets, or possibly slightly to the left outside the photo, I stayed at a very good hotel at a ridiculously low cost, possible the bargain of a lifetime. VT is a nice city but I was still a bit disappointed. I saw several other cities of a similar kind on the Balkans that had grown more harmoniously, with the original style better protected. But from this distance it looks great.

Hello Chris,

Looking at this steep sided hill, it does seem quite remarkable that people consider building here, yet, like on many other hillsides, they do it with great success!
The houses appear like irregular steps, some enjoying greater height and views than others.
You have captured a lot of details in this one shot and achieved good clarity.

C'est curieux la disposition de la ville qui se forme tout en hauteur, les maisons qui se pressent les unes contre les autres comme pour se protéger et suprême avantage chaque maison (ou presque) possède une vue superbe.

Hello Chris, another example of clever building, where there seems to be little space for roads and paths. And yes, it does remind me of Positano.
Some of the buildings look comparatively new too.

Hi Chris,
yes it did make me think of Positano a bit.
Also I come from a town in Poland which is called Tarnow.
So Tarnovo sounds like foreign language version of my home town.
I think I may visit Bulgaria soon but most probably I will rather stay along the coast so even though much tempted -I will never get to Tarnovo :(
So I appreciate your reportage even more :)
