Photographer's Note

The Jean-Michel Nicolier Bridge is the main pedestrian bridge in Vukovar. It was named after Jean-Michael Nicolier, a French volunteer who helped Croatia in the Homeland War. Upon arrival from France, he joined the HOS squad in Karlovac, and in September 1991 he came to Vukovar. He was wounded and later transferred to a hospital. He had the chance to escape Vukovar, which he refused by saying that he will stay there no matter what. He was executed in Ovčara and his body has never been found. During the opening of the Bridge, a picture of him wearing a uniform was handed to his mother. In the picture, behind him there are two symbols of Croatia and France- the Vukovar water tower and the Eiffel tower.
