Photographer's Note

Take the ordinary mail boat which delivers mail to some of the small islands in Nakskov fjord in the southern part of Denmark - and discover a few of our many charming islands.
On one of them , Slot-o ,you wil find these ruins of Denmark's very first ship-yard , built in 1509-10 , and a castle which was erected to protect Nakskov , at the time one of Denmark's significant maritime cities .
The ships were made of timber from the forests on nearby Lolland , and the ships were launched from the shipyard's slipways between the two flank-walls you see to the left pointing into the water .
The water in the foreground is the remains of a moat ,
the bottom most likely covered with upright sharp oak-poles to prevent the enemy from coming close !
