Photographer's Note
Another shot at the newly emerged darters from the day before yesterday. Once they're on the wing it's quite difficult to get a shot in from this angle, as they seem to consider you more threatening when seen from the front (I don't blame them ;-)). But this one was not yet in a position to vote with its feet (or wings, as it were). So, I decided to try out the combination of my close up filters, +2 + +1 = +3 diopter, which gives a very shallow DOF. For this reason no part of the darter's body is within DOF range, but the eye details rather fascinate me ;-) The white dots on its face and eyes *were* there, but what they are, I don't know. Dust, perhaps, or dried up residue from the body fluids used for pumping itself up to full darter size. I thought about cloning them out but decided against it. This was how it looked.
Treatment: Crop, saturation +10, USM and resize.

Excellente mise au point sélective sur les yeux de l'insecte. La composition est parfaite mais il serait intéressant de fixer un papier diffuseur sur le flash.
Excellent DOF on the eyes of the insect. The composition is perfect but it would be interesting to fix a diffusion paper on the flash.

The use of the multiple close-up lens works well here, the face is perfectly pictured so much detail, it shows as much detail as the line diagrams in my ID books use to show the facial differances between the speicies.and going by it and the extent of the black line between the eye and the front of the face I would say it is a Ruddy Darter (Sympetrum sanguineum).
Like Didi`s idea for toning down the flash power, I find even plane white paper works well just increase the number of layer till the picture looks good.

Amazing! I think the white dots may be parasites - I see these on hoverflies too. If only you had focussed on them! ;-)
How close were you from teh subject? I am having trouble approaching dragonflies - how do you get so close?
Well done Bente!

A superb closeup. I'd be interested to know what time of day it was taken.

Hu! What mug! One would say it carries sunglasses (for you Bente of course) : these little bugs are so sensitive to the flash ; -))
More seriously, the DOF is excellent. Technical notes are very interesting and colors are well rendered too.

The technique is quite honestly way beyond anything I can ever hope for. But the result is astonishing. I am not a great fan of macrophotography, but when it opens up new worlds like this, I am amazed.
Incidentally, I dare you to complete a series of ten to fifteen shots with titles from James Bond movies. Are you game?

Hi Bente,
You have some very nice close-ups of insects. This photo is very detailed and sharp, the background is a bit unsharper, but that creates the good DOF. I like the green surroundings of the insect.

Hi Bente! Amazing macro shot! Those eyes are scary! The details, colors and sharpness are excellent! The dragonflies look so harmless since they're tiny, but if they're our size, I would surely be scared! Very good composition! rgds.
