Hello Michael,
He looks old and maybe tired, but he seems to be a book lover, so he couldn't be completely lost. You made another good observation and also very nicely captured the father carrying the girl on his shoulders. Three generations in one shot, the older man well placed in the light and the couple against a dark background.
