Sony Center Construction
For today’s presentation, I’m focussing on the construction of the spectacular roof.

A post especially for the enthousiasts of technology, but also for non-techies there is, I think, plenty to enjoy the geometric and graphic compositions that the construction shows.

To explain the intricate construction, it is good to compare it to the wheel of a bicycle.
The outline of the wheel of a bicycle is formed by the rim. This rim is connected to the wheel axle in the middle by means of the spokes. If you look closely you can see that the spokes connect the rim to both sides of the axis.
This creates a construction that is shaped by long triangles and a triangle is a shape that is rigid and difficult to deform. This keeps the rim in place and keeps the wheel in shape.

The roof construction of the Sony Center is based on this same principle. Only a little bit bigger.
Moreover, the ground shape is not round but an oval of 102 meters in the primary axis and 77 meters in the secondary axis.

In photo 1 you can see the underside of the central axis with the pull rods (spokes) that connect the axis to the outer ring (rim).
In pictures 2 and 3 you see the spacial contructrion of the outer ring (rim). You can also recognize a few pull rods (spokes) that connect the rim to the bottom of the central axis.
Also, on photo 2 we can see how the sails are connected to the axle.
On photo 3 we can also see the glass roof on the outside of "the wheel". In this photo we also see that the top of the axis is formed by a ring from which the spokes run to the rim.
