Photographer's Note

“Let me get it straight” is a phrase which means in English more like “Let me explain”, “Let me clarify”. It came to my mind when looking at the houses in this photo. Obviously trying to make the houses look straight is pointless because they are not straight. In fact, it indicates that they are old and authentic.

This reminds a real-life situation, which I may have shared already with you before, it is about the alternative use of the word “straight”. It is about a friend of mine who I met in Los Angeles. We were both from Central Europe our English skills required a lot of extra work. He went for a yoga class with his friends and he took his towel with him. The towel was pink. The girls from work who work with him told him that this may in fact indicate that he is gay not straight. This new meaning of word “straight” as opposed to “gay” was new to him. On the next trip to a club, he asked for vodka at the bar. The bartender asked him: “Straight?” meaning undiluted. He associated this question with his previous experience and worryingly answered “Yes, I am straight”… I know it sounds a bit as if I was talking about myself but those who know me can confirm that I would never go for a yoga class or drink vodka straight.

From small towns off the beaten track, you can usually expect that they have one small street with not much more to see, but Lüneburg is far more than that. It has a wonderful old town with plenty of unique buildings. Ironically, most of my photos which include the attractive architecture like beautiful town hall or interesting St Johannis church have either terrible white sky or are trimmed because I didn’t have a wide angle zoom then. So, what I am going to share here are just some random street scenes. This photo was taken along a wide promenade called Am Sande.
