Achelous river

The Achelous (Greek: Αχελώος,is a river in western Greece. It formed the boundary between Acarnania and Aetolia of antiquity. It empties into the Ionian Sea. In ancient times its spirit was venerated as the river god Achelous.

Herodotus, taking notice of the shoreline-transforming power of the Acheloos River, even compared it to the Nile in this respect:

'There are other rivers as well which, though not as large as the Nile, have had substantial results. In particular (although I could name others), there is the Achelous, which flows through Acarnania into the sea and has already turned half the Echinades islands into mainland.' (2.10, trans. Waterfield)
It is said to have been called more anciently Thoas, Axenus and Thestius.

Hello Danos,
There is not much water in the river, on the other hand the brown tufts in the water and on the shore contrast beautifully with the white rocks. The yellow sand and the green bushes complement this very colourful pattern. There is also a nice view towards the low hills and the photo has a very fine clarity.

A beautiful view of the river with rich, well-saturated colours in a bright sunlight. The many small bushes, grasses and rocks in and around the water make a very appealing pattern in the landscape.

A very shallow water-level at the estuary area, allow to see the small rocks scattered all along.

Bonjour Danos,

Ce doit être plus beau lorsque l'eau est haute, mais comme ceci, cela ajoute beaucoup de texture au paysage dans les belles teintes de rouille.

Hi Danos,
fantastic natural scenery. In England, Scotland the vegetation also turns into brownish tones in autumn, the effect is similar. I like the wide angle view here. You had a fantastic light with the white stones standing out of the background. The river makes a nice turn in the frame and we see almost no traces of civilization.
