Pyrgi Church, a photo from Hios, North Aegean

Photographer's Note

Here's a shot I took of the main Theotokos church in Pyrgi on Chios Island off the coast from Izmir in Turkey. Like the rest of the town it is covered in these ornate decorations. Here's a wider angled view taken from the balcony of a house across the street. I had to be content with this quick grab shot before the tour bus left.

Hello Chris,
I see there are several earlier photos from here showing these decorated walls, but I didn't remember them. It seems like a very original pattern for buildings, so I wonder when that tradition developed, and why. It's clearly interesting, and this is also a clearly well taken and sharp photo.

You had very less time, but a very successful picture.
This are not the most easy picture for photography.
Also colours and sharpness make your picture very attractive.

I noticed that the facade of the house has similar decorations as the church. But then I read that the rest of the town was decorated in the same way.

This decorative finish must be unique to Chios as I didn't see anything like it elsewhere in Greece. A good interesting photo.

Hello Chris, Very original patterns on the wall of this church. I have never seen anything similar. I have looked at other photos from Pyrgi, and I see it is their speciality.

I like the patterns on the church facade. Quite unusual, although not for this town judging by your photos. You got a good photo despite it being on the shady side of the building. Excellent sharpness and colour.

Quite an extraordinary decoration of the wall. I have never seen anything like it.
I checked the wider picture of the whole church and it is an amazing structure, so pity you were in rush.
It is also a less popular destination in Greece, I believe, I don't remember even hearing the name of this island before,

Great close range sight of the exquisite design of the facade, Chris, all kinds of a returning patterns, each is different line across the outer wall.
