Patras

Patras (Demotic Greek: Πάτρα, Pátra,Classical Greek: Πάτραι, Pátrai, Latin: Patrae) is Greece's third largest urban centre and the capital of the prefecture of Achaea, located in northern Peloponnese, 215 kilometers west of Athens. The city is built at the foothills of Mount Panachaikon, overlooking the Gulf of Patras.
The Patras metropolitan area is a conurbation of 222,460 inhabitants.[3] The core settlement has a history spanning four millennia. In the Roman period it had become a cosmopolitan centre of the eastern Mediterranean whilst, according to Christian tradition, it was also the place of Saint Andrew's martyrdom. Dubbed Greece's Gate to the West, Patras is a commercial hub, while its busy port is a nodal point for trade and communication with Italy and the rest of Western Europe. The city has two public universities and one Technological Institute, hosting a large student population and rendering Patras a major scientific centre with a field of excellence in technological education. The Rio-Antirio bridge connects Patras' easternmost suburb of Rio to the town of Antirrio, connecting the Peloponnese peninsula with mainland Greece. Every spring, the city hosts one of Europe's largest and most colourful carnivals; notable features of the Patras Carnival include its mammoth-sized satirical floats and extravagant balls and parades, enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of visitors in a pleasant Mediterranean climate, with relatively cool yet humid summers and rather mild winters. Patras is also famous for supporting an indigenous cultural scene active mainly in the performing arts and modern urban literature; it was European Capital of Culture 2006.

this is a sight dear to me, (and you know why) and really a great capture to get the boat returning to harbour at sunset, and what a sunset! The colours and the light are wonderful and the whole scene is so rich in atmosphere. I have a collection of hundreds of pictures of sailing boats but I never was able to capture such a scene. I love the way you have captured this boat ghosting into the harbor after the wind has dropped to a whisper. Paul mentioned that got the light at the perfect moment; you framed it perfectly as well between the jetty and and the pier. I also agree with hisd comments about light management, not a hint of overexposure in the bright area while maintaining shadow details.

It is a dream to me as well, that feeling of ghosting into a harbor after flying on the wind in the afternoon. You certainly get to places I would LOVE to visit on a sailboat!!

Looking at this beautiful photo one feels drifted away in a peaceful land where time stops and all there is left is sheer serenity. I just love how clouds are formed like waves of sea and all layed by warm late evening light. Rays in a distance are really nice touch and add to already fantastic atmosphere.

φανταστική απογευματινή φωτογραφία με το ιστιοφόρο να καταφθάνει στο λιμάνι μετά την ημερήσια βόλτα του.Ο πολύχρωμος ουρανός με την τέλεια απόδοση των χρωμάτων και οι επισκέπτες που απολαμβάνουν το υπέροχο αυτό δειλινό,κάνουν το σκηνικό ανεπανάληπτο.

ΥΓ. επαθα μια ζημιά στο κομπιούτερ μου και είχα εκεί όλες τίς φωτογραφίες, προσπαθω να τίς ανακτήσω και εν τω μεταξύ δεν μπορώ να ανεβάσω τίποτα..ελπίζω να μην τίς έχασα...κάποιος φάκελλος μολύνθηκε και μου εκανε μεγάλη ζημιά..μην με ξεχάσεις...

Late afternoon sunset view, the golden light through the clouds created a nice shaded poert scenery.
The incoming boat gave good scale, and fine focal point on scene.
Special ambience conveyed well.
