Oropos

Oropos (Greek: Ωρωπός), or (referring to the ancient town) Oropus, is a small town and a municipality in East Attica, Greece.

It was an important ancient Greek city and the famous nearby sanctuary of Amphiaraos was a large settlement which is visible today.

History

Oropos was founded by colonists from Eretria it was either located in or identical with Graea. In ancient times, it was a border city between Boeotia and Attica, and its possession was a continual cause of dispute between the two states, but ultimately it came into possession of Athens, and was always an Attic town, even during the Roman Empire. The actual harbour, which was called Delphinium, was at the mouth of the Asopus, about a mile (1.6 km) north of the city.

The famous Sanctuary of Amphiaraos was situated in the territory of Oropus, 12 stadia from the city. The site has been excavated by the Greek Archaeological Society, it contained a temple, a sacred spring, into which coins were thrown by worshippers, altars and porticoes, and a small theatre, of which the proskenion is well preserved. Worshippers used to consult the oracle of Amphiaraos by sleeping on the skin of a slaughtered ram within the sacred building.

A wonderful view over the calm and blue sea. I really like the peaceful mood and the composition is superb, I really like the way you included the pier at left and the ferry approaching the port at right. Well done.

Hello Danos,
The red ferry is a wonderful eye-catcher in this environment of blue water, blue sky and almost blue hills. The grey pier, where the ferry is heading, is the only other non-blue element in the photo. The composition is nicely framed and balanced by these two objects. The colours are bright and clear.

Dans quelques instants il y aura foule sur le qui qui semble bien vide pour le moment. Cette photo raconte aussi une belle histoire d'arrivée et de départs sous un très beau ciel bleu.

The distance between the pier and the ferry is creating depth. The point of view is showing the details of the sailboats and of the ferry. The light has a good effect on the colors. Have a nice day.

Hello Danos,

The red ferry really makes this photograph!
It is almost as if it bringing the land towards us and to join up with the moored boats and jetty to the left of the frame.
These features stand out well against a sea and sky which are surrounding them with blue.

The red ferry that has still quite a distance to the pier, is eye catching in this blue composition. Wonderful view of the calm sea. The boats on the right side look also interesting.
