Photographer's Note

The main square along the waterfront of Vathy. The marble lion dates from 1930 and is a copy of the Amphipolis Lion, dated late 4th century BC. It commemorates the centenary of the 1830 Independence struggle against the Ottomans. My boat from Kusadasi in Turkey arrived in Vathy, and it was a convenient place to grab some Euro from an atm, then proceed away from the port city to the more relaxed town of Pythagorian, which has several beaches and coves suitable for swimming and a string of al fresco restaurants around the horseshoe shaped boat harbour.
