The Gemenc Forest in the Duna-Drava National Park, near river Danube and river Sio.
"The national park in Gemenc Forest is the most beautiful flood-plain forest in Hungary. This area characterized by fens, oxbow lakes and islands, preserves the landscape before the Danube was regulated.
Old willow trees, giant oaks and poplars, lilies-of-the-valley, grey herons, eagles, black storks, tufted herons, various water fowl and deer with the largest antlers in Hungary populate the charming little islands. This protected region can only be visited via small boats or the narrow-gauge railway between Bárányfok and Pörböly."
"The Gemenc forest is one of the largest contiguous floodplain forests in Europe and is a significant natural value also on international level.
The national park makes every effort to represent the interests of nature conservation and eco-tourism in the Gemenc region, however, it is unable to realise its goals on its own."
