Closer view of the green ice in the base of the glacier Sólheimajökull.
It was the same unlucky day when my batteries were quickly flat and I couldn't take photos that I wanted.

Hello Malgo,
Are all those small green areas actually ice? I could have sworn they were patches of moss or grass. How fascinating, and what a fascinating view generally with the light brown steep rock beside the sloping glacier. The contrast between the bright sunny area and the shade is quite strong but you exposed it well.

No indication as to why the ice is or appears green? Rather bizarre. Fascinating landscape very well captured. Nicely exposed with good colour contrasts and very good sharpness.

You had such an amazing sunlight again and a fantastic and stark contrast of the warm and blue colours. The textures of the rocks are also lit perfectly by this sunlight.

Without your note, I would have thought it were small plants or moss.
Does the ice only look green in the sunshine or also in the shade?

Hi dear Malgo,

This is a remarkable phenomenon which you have recorded in this photograph - but what a shame that you couldn't have taken more on this particular day because of your failed batteries.

Of course, as Gert and others have remarked, these green areas do look like moss or algae or even grass and I'm wondering if there is any scientific explanation for this curious apparent colouration of the ice? Of course, if anyone would know of a scientific explanation, it would be yourself - a physicist!

A remarkable photograph, very well seen and very well taken with lovely light, rich colours and exceptional details and clarity.
