Photographer's Note

Salina is the highest and most fertile of the Aeolian islands.Capers and Malvasia wine are cultivated and sold all over the island.

Pollara is situated on a cliff above the sea, occupying a crescent-shaped crater from which Salina's last volcanic eruption took place 13,000 years ago.

Scenes from Michael Radford's film "Il Postino" were shot here and on the narrow beach at the base of a striking white semicircular cliff wall (closed this summer because of the danger of falling rocks) below the village. Pollara's beach and this minature shoreline of rocks, with their pristine seclusion and crystalline waters, is one of the best in the Aeolian islands.

If you walk along the shoreline at the top of the photo and turn right, you will be able to reach Punta del Pericato, a beautiful natural arc, otherwise visible only from the sea.
