Photographer's Note

View of Siena's Piazza del Campo plaza from atop the Torre del Mangia, the bell tower of the Palazzo Pubblico. This unusual shell-shaped plaza is the site of the famous twice-yearly (July 2 and August 16) Palio horse races between the 17 Contrade or neighborhoods of Siena. Many consider Siena to be the best-preserved medieval city in Italy.

The 306-step climb to the top of the 102-meter high tower is well worth it, for both this view into the plaza and for the view of the countryside in the opposite direction (which I'll post sometime in the future). To get this picture with the shadows of the tower, I had to wait until the right time of the day to climb up.

i was there two years ago,in siena but i didnt take photo like this because i was ill in the trip,i was unhappy cause there was pain all my body part. (your photo remembers to me)

Hi Dave,

Wonderful scene. I was there at four months ago. It was an incredible experience. A small detail: I have to admit that in Italy I was looking for this piazza and the tower also. Because one of the my favourite movies named as "Piazza Della Cinque de Luna" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0366900/) the doctor climbs to top of the tower and confess the truth about the assasination of the Aldo Moro, a former Italy Prime Minister to his friends. I looked around every tower and square in Rome, but I could not find. The time that I was almost giving up to find this magnificent tower, I found it while visiting this fascinating small town. I see that six state in my beautifulst Tuscany. Optimal light, and the hour was that decisive one. Bravo ps: I dress little more than an hour than machine from them.
