Vulgar Name: Mnemosine

Family: Papilionidae

Front wing length mm. 23-32

Description: it is one of the three species of the genus Parnassius present in Italy. Characterized by a white background color with black veins and some black spots, P. mnemosyne is rare and localized in humid clearings of hills or mid-mountain, both near the Alps and the Apennines.
The larva feeds on plants of the genus Corydalis. Like all species of its kind, it is a survivor of the ice age

Male: translucent white color with black spots and gray areas. Subarginal area of the front transparent.

Female: Similar to the male but with more extensive spots and gray areas

Distribution: Alps, Apennines and Sicily.

Habitat: fresh meadows and clearings of the mountain and cacuminal plain, from 600 to about 2200 meters above sea level

Annual generations: one with flickering from June to July

Nourishing plants: Corydalis cava, Corydalis solida.
