The Towers of Bologna are a group of medieval structures in Bologna, Italy. The two most prominent ones, also called the Two Towers, are the landmark of the city.
Between the 12th and the 13th century, the number of towers in the city was very high, possibly up to 180.
The reasons for the construction of so many towers are not clear. One hypothesis is that the richest families used them for offensive/defensive purposes during the period of the Investiture Controversy.
During the 13th century, many towers were taken down or demolished, and others simply collapsed. Many towers have subsequently been utilized in one way or the other: as prison, city tower, shop or residential building.
Of the numerous towers originally present, fewer than twenty can still be seen today. Among the remaining ones in the picture you can see, on the left the Azzoguidi Tower, also called Altabella (with a height of 61 m), and on the right the Prendiparte Tower, called Coronata (60 m)

Le torri di Bologna, strutture con funzione sia militare sia gentilizia di origine medioevale, sono uno dei tratti più caratteristici della città.
Tra il XII ed il XIII secolo il numero delle torri innalzate nella città era molto grande: in passato si è parlato addirittura di 180, ma si tratta di una sovrastima, nata da un'errata interpretazione degli antichi testi notarili.
Le ragioni per cui vennero innalzate tante torri non sono ancora chiare, ma si pensa che le famiglie più ricche, nel periodo di lotta per le investiture filo-imperiali e filo-papali, le utilizzassero come strumento di offesa e/o di difesa e come simbolo di potere.
Nel corso del XIII secolo molte torri furono mozzate o demolite, altre crollarono. In epoche successive furono utilizzate in diversi modi: carceri, torri civiche, negozi, abitazioni.
Delle numerosissime torri presenti in antichità oggi se ne sono salvate meno di venti. Fra le torri superstiti nella foto si riconoscono, sulla sinistra la Torre Azzoguidi, detta Altabella (61 metri di altezza) e a destra la Torre Prendiparte, detta Coronata (59,50 m).
