Photographer's Note

Two girls sit by the fountain in Piazza Grande, Montepulciano, Siena, Italy.

Montepulciano is a major producer of food and drink. Renowned for its pork, cheese, "pici" pasta, lentils, and honey, it is known world-wide for its wine. Connoisseurs consider its Vino Nobile, which should not be confused with varietal wine merely made from the Montepulciano grape, among Italy's best. The Cantina Contucci, just off the Piazza Grande to the left of this shot, is the city's jail, now converted into a wine cellar. The Contucci family claims to have made wine and owned vineyards for over 40 generations, or over 1000 years in the Montepulciano area. We went there immediately after this, finding it almost by mistake, wandering through a door in what was a music academy and down flights of stairs through darkly beautiful barrel storage. These girls don't look like winos however.
