Dolomiti Reflection, a photo from Trento, Trentino Alto Adige

Photographer's Note

Cimon della Pala (3184 m) and the Pale di San Martino group reflected at Baita Segantini. Dolomites, Italy in June.

From my experience, there aren't many lakes in the Dolomites, which is one reason I was happy to get this reflection shot. It's a very common photo spot... lots of postcards from here... but I still like it!

This moment was towards the end of an epic day of hiking... I left the town of San Martino di Castrozza at sunrise and hiked all day, up and over several mountains in a big loop, ending up in this area near Cimon della Pala, the pointy mountain on the right. I spent several hours hiking around to different vantage points to see different angles on the mountain, but returned to this pond just before sunset. The weather calmed, as did the water, right before sunset.

My plan was to just walk all the way back to town down the road at night, but luckily somebody picked me up and gave me a ride back to town!

Hi Jack, talking about reflection.. wow, this is really nice. The lake is like a perfect mirror, no flaws or circles, but completely flat. Very good.
It's like you cut the photo in half and put a copy of the topbit under it.

Beautiful late-afternoon light, and great reflection.
It is good for the mountain hut to be dark in the shade, and also the shape of the cloud is effective.

Just wonderful ! Reflects are always nice photos, but this one has the perfect graphical style, nice pics, warms coulors in the mountain, the black hill in the shadow, and a nice blue sky with clouds that are some more graphism.
Lucky you to have been there whith that beautiful light !

Great shot and thanks for sharing the story with it. Technically I think it's close to perfect. The mountain hut is a bit dark, but I think the image lives from the lake, the mountain and its reflection. More details in the hut would just distract.

Perfect reflection Jack. I tried taking it and unfortunately I never was at the right time. Always the water use to wave because of the wind.

Incredible landscape, made even more spectacular that their are now two in shot.
Perfect 50/50 composition and unbelievably glassy reflection.
