Church of San Gregorio Maggiore - Spoleto
The Romanesque church was built between the 11th and 12th centuries on an ancient cemetery area on the edge of the city of Spoleto.
According to legend, in the fourth century a widow named Abbondanza in this place gave burial to San Gregorio and other martyrs, probably killed in the nearby amphitheater in the year 304.
On the façade, preceded by a portico with three arches from the 16th century and a descending staircase, an elegant three-light window and three pointed niches stand out.
On the right there is the bell tower, which in the upper part has an obvious addition, dating back to the fifteenth century, while the base is contemporary with the church itself.
On the left there is the fourteenth-century Cappella degli Innocenti, containing a sixteenth-century baptismal font, now used as a baptistery.
Inside, the three naves, separated by columns and round arches, end with a tri-apsidal and raised presbytery. From the side stairs to this one descends to the crypt, divided into five naves and also with three apses.
The walls are decorated with interesting frescoes, mostly from the 15th century, some of which have recently been restored. Among these, in the right aisle of the presbytery, the large fresco "the Madonna with Child and Eve".
The oldest paintings date back to the 12th century: "stories of the Passion of Christ", "Deacons and presbyters within clipei", "San Gregorio", "figures of saints". (SEE THE WS)
Worth noting is a beautiful canvas by Sebastiano Conca.
