Death of the Righteous
The façade of the church of San Pietro extra moenia (see the WS) began with thick horizontal cornices intersected by large vertical pilasters which give it an almost Renaissance compositional balance. Within this basic structure, minor panels contain figured bas-reliefs and other rich ornaments distributed harmoniously. Starting from the top left there is a statue of St. Peter, on the right Sant’Andrea; under two stone bulls, as symbols of life destined for sacrifice, like Christ; the central rectangle was intended to house a large sacred figure, perhaps a mosaic, but it remained empty. Three rose windows animate the median order. The central one, of which the external frame with Cosmatesque mosaic decorations and the bas-reliefs with the symbols of the Evangelists in the corners remain, is very similar to that of the Cathedral, but of lower quality. In the lower part of the façade there are three portals flanked by stone animals. On the sides of the central one, decorated with two lions, there are two series of figured bas-reliefs contained within rectangular panels.
On the left from top to bottom is the Death of the Righteous, among the best of the entire facade: St. Peter frees the righteous from their chains; the balance that weighs his soul hangs on the side of St. Michael the Archangel but a devil, showing a cartouche on which is written DOLEO Q (UIA) AN (TE) E (RAT) MEUS, I grieve because he was mine before, tries to stealing on the weight by lowering the scale on his side and is punished by St. Peter with a key stroke; repentance, even on the verge of death, saves the soul of man.
