Church of Santa Maria della Manna d’Oro - Spoleto
In Piazza Duomo, attached to the Caio Melisso Theater, we find the ex-church of S. Maria della Manna d'Oro, with an octagonal plan.
It seems that it may be a votive building, dedicated to the Virgin who protected the relations between Spoleto and the army of Charles V after the sack of Rome in 1527. The fact that the troops had not devastated Spoleto and that, on the contrary, they proved to be a source of income through commerce, it was assimilated to the divine gift of Manna in the desert.
In reality a church dedicated to the "Madonna della Misericordia" would have existed, in that place, already in 1399. Then, after the construction of 1527/1530, only in 1679 did the church take its present form.
Inside, in the center, the fifteenth-century baptismal font from the Eroli Chapel.
Currently, the Manna d'Oro is used as an exhibition center.
