Church of Santa Maria della Misericordia - Spoleto
The church is located on the lower floor of the turreted apse of the church of San Nicolò, the large temple built by the Augustinians on the area of the two ancient churches of San Nicola and San Massimo. In 1263 the original church dedicated to San Nicolò da Bari was, in fact, granted by the bishop Bartolomeo Accorambi to a nucleus of Augustinian eremitani, already present in the convent adjacent to the church of Saints Concordio and Senzia, now San Salvatore, in Spoleto.
Later the Augustinians also bought the nearby church of San Massimo and other houses; on the overall available area they built a new church dedicated to Saints Agostino, Nicolò and Massimo: in 1304 the first stone was placed.
Coeval to the above, to which it serves as a base, therefore dates back to the early fourteenth century; probably the two churches have never been communicating with each other.
It was the seat of the lay brotherhood of Mercy and the Good Death, whose members, wearing black hoods, accompanied the deceased on their last journey. As the superior was held by the Augustinians.
The church is currently not open to visitors, it is used by the Diocesan Caritas as a warehouse.
The main and most valuable portal, made up of bundles of small columns with capitals decorated with plant motifs, rosettes and human heads, overlooks a tiny square. Around the arch there is a ring set on leafy shelves, above, in the central position a pelican is sculpted. Legend has it that the pelican injures its chest to make the little ones drink the blood, or eat its flesh, depending on the version. It is therefore an allegory of Christ giving his body for the salvation of his children, a Christian symbol of sacrifice and charity. A similar symbolism can also be seen in the external right pulpit of the Duomo.

Hello Silvio,
The wooden gate is rather peculiar for a church, but maybe it has been installed here after this was converted to a warehouse. It seems to fit a warehouse better than a church. It is however surrounded by some very beautiful details, which I am able to fully appreciate thanks to the sharpness and clarity of the photo. I also like the fine cobbled street.
Best regards,
Gert

Silvio, that church has a long history. The old wooden door looks very strong. I like the arch shaped frame with some decorations carved in the stone. Fine colors, good sharpness, regards.

Two sequential photos from this church, Silvio.
I like the one posted here, the close-up sight of the old wooden door and the attractive arch-lintel with old pebble-stones pavement - all those made it attractive picture.
Buona serata,
Ike

Ciao Caro Silvio,
The details of the doorway and the surrounding, sculptured stonework, are very sharp. You have shown us the door, exactly as it is, without decoration or adornments, and created a sense of great age.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Buona serata,Luciano

Hello dear silvio and have a nice day
this wooden door shows how old this
church is,,,but the strange here
is that this wooden gate is
not suitable for this church....
may be it has been taken
from a different place...

Hi Silvio
A lovely capture portraying the old rustic portal from yester-years and its natural colours as it stands the test of time. The deep brown wooden door draws the eye naturally with immense detail throughout the shot. Excellent
Best wishes
