Madonna di Fossa

The statue, an absolute masterpiece of the Italian fourteenth century, is kept at the National Museum of Abruzzo de L’Aquila, comes from the church of Santa Maria ad cryptas.
Carved and painted wood from the fourteenth century, (SEE WS) is the eponymous work of the Master of Fossa, a painter and sculptor from Spoleto, one of the finest artists of the fourteenth century. The seated Virgin, perfectly frontal, wears a red tunic and a golden mantle with black decorations on the edge of her, wears a crown on her head. Below a white veil that falls on her shoulders, the split hair can be seen. She supports, standing on her knee, with her left hand, the blessing Child, who wears a green tunic and a golden mantle. The group is contained within a triangular tabernacle decorated in the upper part by an arching with a starry sky, in the middle part by a red and silver damask drape as a backbone and in the lower part by a Cosmatesque type seat on where the Virgin is seated. The stolen doors that originally closed the tabernacle showed, on the left, the Annunciation, the Adoration of the Magi and the Presentation in the Temple, the only remaining pane and currently preserved in the Museum; on the right the Crucifixion, the Flogging and the Kiss of Judas (SEE WS).

this statue has marvelous aspect, there is something of modernist in the expression of Mary and the Baby and, at same time, she has a curious way of looking.

Ciao Caro Silvio,

I like seeing the close-up details of the sculpture (the whole being added as an informative w/s).
The details are crisp, with a good 3D effect, whilst the reflected light suggests the smooth finish to the surfaces.
There always seems to be a difficulty, in Medieval paintings and sculptures, to make baby faces look young.

Hello Silvio,
The statue is truly a masterpiece, and in this close view it makes quite a different impression from the whole piece seen in the WS. The light and photo angle enhance the shapes and give the main photo a strong 3D effect. But the baby looks like a very small middle aged man.

I agree, this statue is a masterpiece. I especially like the combination of colours. The child seems to have some message in his mind. I wonder what the artist wanted to express here.
