Caves of Quadratini and Finestroni - Vallerano (VT)
The two caves are located just on the edge of the town of Vallerano.
Along the path that leads to the first cave there are some underground rooms, now used mostly as a storage room and, in the recent past as animal shelters and stables, the genesis and original use are unknown.
The Grotta dei Quadratini is characterized by internal walls pierced by more or less square niches, in fact it is a beautiful columbarium, a type of structure quite frequent in Tuscia.
Even the period of construction and the first destinations of use of this underground environment are ignored, it was almost certainly used for the breeding of pigeons, an activity that, in the Middle Ages, constituted an important resource, both as a source of precious animal proteins, and for guano, used as a fertilizer.

Hello Silvio,
This is an interesting view and there should be some excitement with exploring these caves. They look so perfectly created that it's hard to imagine they are so very old. It's a good photo with perfect exposure of dark and bright parts.

Hello Silvio,
I like the contrast between the dark left hand side and the lighter left, from where the light streamed in. The textures of the old stone are nicely highlighted this way as well.

Hello Silvio, How strange that these caves were used for pigeons. They seem so perfectly cut in the rock. A fascinating place for exploration.

Hello Silvio, you managed the difficult light really well so that we are able to see the interior of the caves. We can see the marks made on the stone by the masons in shaping the stone.
Your point of view means that we can see the interior as well as the entrance.
