Hermitage of the Madonna di Panico or Paganico.
A Paganica Villa is included in the list of castles that in 1490 supplied infantrymen to the town of Spoleto to fight in Frénfrano. Few people know this splendid place hidden in the mountains where a small treasure of Umbrian Romanesque art is hidden, a church perhaps built on a pre-existing building of pagan origin, as the name "Paganico" would suggest and various Roman remains found there between which a stone with the name of the Clustumina tribe carved into it. In the sacristy of the church, Sordini reports the existence of a fragment of a decorated sarcophagus, on which an inscription is engraved, while Pietrangeli refers to a cippus with decoration and inscription dating back to the 1st century. A.D. Also from this locality the provenance of a further funerary stone with inscription is reported. Of particular importance is the inscription, which mentions a Calvedius from Carsulae, as well as the shape of the stone itself which falls within the so-called "Carsulana" typology. These facts would support the thesis that the border between the two Roman municipalities would pass in the area, excluding the site of the Church of Santa Maria from the Spoleto territory.

Hello Silvio,
This old grey building is attractively simple. The bell tower reveals its religious purpose. It is nicely situated among low hills and the blue sky provided a very nice photo.

Ciao Silvio,questi luoghi purtroppo hanno perso la memoria storica e spesso si fanno diverse ipotesi sul passato come leggo nelle note e in base ai ritrovamenti, pero' l'edificio si mantiene bene, curato e colto in una vista totale eccellente, gli asparagi li hai colti in questa zona? Very nice asymmetric capture with the interesting tower reaching above the church building. The weather was fantastic with a brilliant sky, which makes a big difference.

Hi Silvio
such a strange build, with the tower up high like that, but the roofline is so much lower...perhaps there is a part that's missing or has fallen down over the years? No matter, its aged, its rustic, its photogenic. I would love to get inside!
