Thermopolium

After so many frescoes and monuments, a glimpse of everyday life.

The Thermopolium (VI.8.8) is located next to the House of the Tragic Poet.
In the excavated part of Pompeii (which amounts to two thirds of the ancient urban space) there are as many as 89 thermopolia, small taverns for the sale of food, hot a bit like our cafeterias, they were certainly not
the wealthy owners of the large atrium houses to dine outside, frequented these places in the lower classes. Passing through Pompeii, you can see many houses and shops, inserted in the large houses, which directly overlook the street and which often consist of a single room.
Here lived and worked artisans and traders, who often lived with their families on the upper floors. These houses rarely had a kitchen. So we went out to eat,
in one of the many thermopolias that offered ready-to-serve hot food.
Among the customers there were certainly also the many traders who frequented the city.
Date of excavation: 1920s.
