Vilnius - Gates of Dawn (also called Ostra Brama) - one of the architectural symbols of Vilnius, a holy place for Catholics. Each day piligrims come to see the holy picture of the Holy mother of God which is inside the chapel and according to some catholic believers, has miraclous powers.
And since I'm not a believer, for me it is a nice monument to the architecture and history of the city. The chapel is a part of former defensive city wall, these were the main gates of the city entering from the south.
The 16th century Gates of Dawn originally formed part of the town fortifications, being built into the original city wall. In 1671 Carmelites from neighbouring St. Theresa’s built a chapel in the gates to house a holy image of the Virgin Mary, reputed for miracle-working powers. The chapel’s interior was refurbished in the neo-classical style in 1829 and should not be missed. If you’re walking from Old Town, look for a door on the left and go up the stairs.
