‘Heraclea - Macedonia's largest archaeological site’
For everyone who likes ancient sites. I know Malgo does.
But of course Malgo has already visited the place.
Most pictures of this site on TE are classified under Heraklea. So I add my photos there although actually the name is Heraclea or Herakleia (fully Heraclea Lyncestis or Herakleia Lynkestis) …
It was an ancient Greek city in Macedonia, ruled later by the Romans.
The ruins are situated at 2 km outside of the city of Bitola, the second largest city in the country (according to some on Wikipedia only the third largest).
Founded in the 4th century BC Heraclea was named in honour of the mythological hero Heracles.
In the middle of the 2nd century B.C. the Romans conquered Macedonia and made it a province. It became a prosperous period for Heraclea.
From the Roman period we can see the baths, the portico of a courtroom, the theatre and parts of other buildings within the town walls.
The large basilica of Heraclea was a monumental building. Its rooms were paved with mosaics with geometric, floral and zoomorphic motifs.
Especially interesting is the mosaic in the narthex, with an area of over 100 m². It's a masterpiece of the early Christian art.
Life in Heraclea died out at the end of the 6th century when it is believed the population moved to the present location of nearby Bitola.

Goedenavond Paul,
Wanneer u daar voorstaat moet dit een gigantische indruk geven.
Wat men vroeger kon realiseren.

Indrukwekkend.

Hello Paul,
This and the first WS are relatively similar, but I decided I prefer this one because of a deeper view among the walls, with some open space in the central part, better placed arches and a better view of the hilly surroundings. The mosaic is terrific, but it's the kind of photo I agree is best placed in the WS. It is clearly an interesting place, but I usually find it hard to really imagine what a place like this once looked like. I am not able to transform the ruined walls into real buildings with roofs.
Best regards,
Gert

Bonsoir Paul,
La composition est bien divisée, le ciel, les montagnes et les ruines. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails du site archéologique. Le ciel nuageux ne nuit pas au rendu des couleurs. Bonne soirée.

Hello Paul,
Always intriguing sights in ancient cities. Clearly shown the old walls in the FG, while some bad weather shown above the mountain slopes on the far side.
The mosaic on the WS is an excellently preserved item.
Have a nice friday,
Ike

Hi Paul,
Not so much is left but the remaining details allow us to appreciate the former beauty of the place. I like visiting the ancient sites but sometimes there is not even enough to take a photo.
On that day you were helped by the interesting weather conditions with the approaching storm.
Very well seen and captured,
M

Hello Paul,
The intersection of the set of visited places by you and me in North Macedonia is rather small. I forgot that I was there near Bitola :). I like these ruins. Maybe the flowers and grass on the walls are not good, but they look wild and beautiful. I remember these arches and of course, the magnificent mosaics there. It is maybe difficult to imagine how the houses looked like but the theatre there is well preserved.
Nice pictures and nice memories for me.
Best regards MAlgo

Amazing that some arches and columns are still intact.
The mosaic is a beautiful piece.
The walls look remarkably well built.
