Samuil's Fortress over the old town in Ohrid

Samuel's Fortress is a fortress in the old town of Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia. It was the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire during the rule of Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria at the turn of the 10th century. Today, this historical monument is a major tourist attraction and was heavily restored in 2003 with the addition of entirely new battlements where none had survived.

According to recent excavations by Macedonian archaeologists, it was contended that this fortress was built on the place of an earlier fortification, dated to the 4th century BC, which was probably built by King Philip II of Macedon.

Samuel’s fortress was once one of the most impregnable strongholds in the Balkans, with walls 3 km (1.8 m) long and 16 m (52 ft) high. Today, 18 towers and four gates still remain from the original structure. With its strategic location overlooking the town and the lake, it provides an ideal place for taking in the whole panorama of Ohrid and its surroundings.

A fine view of the fortress of Ohrid and the old Ottoman town on the hillside below. It is an impressive sight and the photo also makes an impression with the excellent exposure and intense colours.

An excellent view of the houses in the background and the impressive fortress sitting in the background atop the hill. The light was great and came from just the right angle. Very well captured with great clarity.

Hi Piotr,

It would have been the icing on the cake to have the striped Macedonian flag fluttering in the breeze, but then the reflections on the lake in other shots would be disturbed. Good sharpness and upward pov. I loaded a similar shot recently. Tfs!

Ta twierdza w Ohrydzie jest rzadziej pokazywana. ładne domy, przypominajace mi architekturę Albanii (nic dziwnego, niedaleko). Swietne kolory, atrakcyjna kompozycja.

Well allocated the picture space, just by the 2/3 rule, and fine visible objects.
The old walls prominently above town houses, most have same style - but each is a bit different.

the shapes of this castle remind me those of portuguese castles. nice aspect of the traditional ottoman houses in the slopes bellow.

its great to see these cities when they lay beneath the fortress from hundreds of years past. Doesn't matter where in the world, I enjoy them all. The lighting is mute and attractive, the exposure is spot on too. Nice to have the fortress wall expanding all across the frame. cheers
