Photographer's Note

There is a legend supported by observations by the 17th century Ottoman traveler Evliya Çelebi that there were 365 chapels within the town Ohrid boundaries, one for every day of the year. Today this number is significantly smaller.
Dating to the 13C, this church is covered with rare frescoes, representative of the country's rich Byzantine heritage.
Holy Mary Peribleptos Church
Built in 1295, the Holy Mother of God Peribleptos is one of the oldest churches in the historic town of Ohrid. The domed cross-in-square church was commissioned by the Byzantine governor Progonos Sgouros, a son-in-law of emperor Andronikos II Palaeologos. The frescoes in the church —which have substantially contributed to current knowledge of Palaeologan painting— include images from the Passion and the Gospels, the life of the Virgin Mary, and the life of John the Baptist. Byzantine painters Michael and Eutychios signed their work at the church, making Holy Mother of God Peribleptos one of only four churches that preserves the signatures of these important artists. An ambulatory was added to the church in the fourteenth century, but closed off in the nineteenth century, giving the entrance to the building its unusual appearance.

Hello Piotr,
Although the roofs look quite new, most of the church looks respectfully old and is beautifully designed with various sections of different heights and shapes. The white tower of another church rises surprisingly behind the old dome. Most impressive of all is the technical quality of the photo. The light and contrasts, as well as the sharpness, are amazing.

witaj Piotrze, nastśliczna cerkiewka w tym samym stylu. fantastyczne sa te ozdobne mury z kamienia i cegły. Troche razi tu nowa biała wieża. To ten sam kościół, czy może nastepny za nim. Ohrid to raj dla fotografów. Myslałam, czy by sie nie zapisac na te wycieczkę, ale juz w tym roku za późno. Nie ma ofert.

I see they had renovated parts of the old church, especially notable the roof tiles. Interesting history and sure looks Byzantine style, at least from the outside. Fine outcome as usual.

That's a wonderful bit of history and all in one upload nicely put together depicting the contrast between old and bit of new dome at the back. Great piece of photo journalism and there's much to see in this ancient church. I love the marriage of clean blue sky and a deep brown colour - which gives more a sense of the passage of time. bardzo lubie koscioly w tym stylu -moze dlatego ze jest mi tak obcy i kojarzy mi sie z czyms egzotycznym.
Dobre ostre swiatlo podkresla szorstka powierzchnie murow.
W oddali druga wieza w innym stylu dla kontrastu.
