Photographer's Note
A break from the autumn colours today. This one was made one of the late evenings in June (at 21:30, to be precise, and see - the sun wasn't down yet! hard to believe now in December when it is already completely dark at 16:30...) from the coastal dike in Hindeloopen village in the province of Friesland, north of the Netherlands. This dike and even this fence were already featured in one of my earlier posts; to make the present photo, I was standing on top of the dike and shooting down to the Zuiderzee. Actually Zuiderzee ("South Sea") is a historic name, given when it was really a sea; in 1932, however, it was closed by a 32 km-long dike and became a lake - click on the map and zoom out to have an idea.
"Down to the waterline" is the first song on the first album of Dire Straits (1978).

B&W works perfectly here, the sea and the grass (?) makes great textures and the fence adds the subject to the photo. Good composition too, with the fence on the left side opening the right side for its shadow

I like the contrast from the evening light and the graphic lines of the fence and its shadow which work well to lead our eye to the dyke. Simple composition but very attractive.

This has a wonderful simplicity Alexander, and I love the play of light and shadow.
You composed this really well, paying careful attention to the position of both the fenceline and it's shadow within the frame.
The bright highlights in the top left corner could do with a bit of burning in, but that's quite a minor detail at the end of the day.
Excellent work.
Cheers,
Ben

Hi Alexander, I love this picture. First of all, the BW you chose. Second, the relfection is great. Third, the picture is simple, but effective and interesting. Fourth, the framing is great. And finally, it is very sharp. I love it. Wonderful work. Sothy

Greetings, Alexander. The less is more school of thought is in evidence here. It could be described as bleak, especially in b/w, but that is half its appeal. You have a fence that suggests we follow it rather than come up against it. The stark and long shadows suggest warmth, add interest, and remind us of the strongly backlit nature of the shot. There's a little over-exposure in the top left, but I'm not sure it should be compensated for as it leads the eye towards the sun, and one would expect the lightness in that area. The ultra sharpness of the grass is very effective. Well done.
Regards,
Andrew

Hi Alexander!
Nice B&W composition, with a good tonal range, fine luminosity (well chose low exposure velocity) and good brightness, too.
Well done!

Hi Alexander, the fence beautifully takes the eye to the water, a nice effect; the shadow draws pleasant lines on the grass and that's nice to see too - and a great song connection, well done! Daniel

Hello Alexander,
I like this simple but very effective composition a lot. Tones and detail are perfect but what does it for me are the shadows thrown by the fence. Excellent work.

Hallo Alexander,
It could easily happen, and so that I overlook this photo. Seldom one sees in Yours folio photoes performed in the technique B & W. Lately however with the large success you put out such photoes what confirms going out popularity of this technique. I think that this picture belongs to these best which lately I saw at You. The lack of the colour not at all hinders in the reception of this work, but on contrary - it helps. Superbly you fixed the equilibrium among the shadow and lights. Beautifully you placed in the picture this simple motive, the fence and you permitted to the sun to multiply him with the shadow.
Splendid work, fine quality!
Best regards from rainy Poznan,
Jurek

Hi Alexander,
A very artistic representation, well rendered in the B&W format. The lighting is very special here, with fine shadow effects. The POV is such that one experiences the effect of standing on a tall bank - the dike - with great depth obtained. Very fine work, Alexander...later.

Hello Alexander,
This is a beautiful composition, where the lead-in lines are very effective!
I like the geometry, and for once I find a B&W landscape all right...
The shadow increases impact... literally!

Hi Alexander,
A very strong, fraphic image. Great choice of b/w, and excellent composition of light and shadow. I'd try to push the contrast a bit more, but it is a beautiful image.

Hi Alex, this is a nice picture here, very graphical and artistic, well seen this play of light / shadow. The crop is judicious to isolate the main element in this composition. Good high contrasts, i like it a lot
Great !
