The Netherlands has been gripped in ice-fever the last couple of days. Where there was once water, now is ice, and on the ice skaters. Sports skaters, long distance skaters, children learning to skate with chairs, kids being pulled on sleighs. But tomorrow it starts to thaw and the Vaart here in Vlaardingen will once again be for the swans and coots.

What is left of the ice is starting to look dangerous. It's a good picture of two seasons in one, with skaters and birds all in their best elements side by side.

Here the skaters have to be very careful not to end up in the water.
The situation is identical in Belgium. Those who wanted to skate had to do it this weekend. From tomorrow, temperatures will rise ... and it will rain.
Excellent picture with a lot of depth. Beautiful foreground with the ducks and geese.

Nice photo with this frozen landscape and all these people skating, good effect with the fg and all these birds on water, I have seen yesterday evening on french TV news all the rivers and lakes in your country with people skating ... so tomorrow, the end and soon springtime !

Hello Elaine, I like the view of so many coots here. Nice view of the people that finally are able to skate on the canal, as in the old times. I hope that the water is not deep., the ice looks a bit fragile. Very pleasant scene.

Hello Elaine,

This looks so much fun.
What a great way to get the family out together, in the fresh air, keeping fit. I suppose it's a great way to see neighbours, too, who have been hidden during lockdown.
Your photograph is very well composed, using the frozen canal as the perfect guide, from the birds, to the people, to the houses.

Does it get dangerous at this time?
The ice looks to have melted in the f/g, close to where people are still skating.

I like the effects of the reflections on the ice, especially as the they turn the skaters upside down.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. A nice contrast between the waterfowl at right and the skaters at left. Good sharpness and nice repetition of the black coots. Tfs!

Hello Elaine, some of the skaters seem a little too close to where the ice is melting for my liking; I am sure that they know what they are doing.
There are a lot of Coots in the foreground, I have never seen so many altogether.
It is a lovely shot of the people out enjoying themselves.

Goedenavond Elaine,

Ja vandaag is alles voorbij, geen schaatspret meer.
Dus ook een Elfstedentocht wat natuurlijk de kroon op het werk is.
Het is een wonder dat de eenden maar vooral Meerkoeten het water openhouden.
Misschien tot volgend jaar voor deze schaatsers

Hallo Elaine,
Het is inderdaad voorbij dankzij alle regen van vandaag, maar op deze foto is er nog voldoende ijspret te zien. Er was gelukkig ook nog een stuk water overgebleven voor de vele meerkoeten en de twee zwanen.

Hi Elaine,
Quite a view of all these skaters using a rare opportunity to this Dutch tradition. It doesn't look very safe with the foreground being ice free. But at least, if the ice breaks, there are other people around to help.
