Photographer's Note

Cycling from our home this is the first view we see of Delft.
Delft, of course is famous Dutch city, the birthplace of Vermeer. The home of the Delft Blue pottery, the association with the House of Orange, and so much more.
One event that you may not know is the Delft Explosion in 1654. A magazine holding 30 tons of explosive situated in the center of the city exploded, destroying much of the city and killing around 100 people. The casualties would have been much more had there not been an annual fair in a nearby town, Schiedam, where many had spent the day.
After the explosion the Kruithuis, (magazine storage) was rebuilt but this time outside the city. I will show you this later as we cycled past.
