Photographer's Note

This is a picture from the town of Huizen (which simply means “Houses” in Dutch), which is pretty close to where I live. Huizen used to be located at the Zuiderzee, a former bay of the North Sea, which was closed off in the 20th century to become the fresh water lake IJsselmeer. Huizen is now located at the lake Gooimeer, which is one of the Bordering Lakes (Randmeren) of the new province of Flevoland, which was created by land reclamation in the former Zuiderzee.

This photo shows the harbour area of Huizen with the Botterwerf (Botter Shipyard, a botter is a traditional Dutch fishing vessel). The chimneys are part of an old lime kiln.
