Photographer's Note

Even though I showed a photo of the Torun Old Town Hall before, I decided to share it again this time in the company of Nicolaus Copernicus. Nicolaus Copernicus (1473 – 1543) was certainly one of the most brilliant minds in the history of science. He was born in Torun in the Kingdom of Poland. I mention that because Germans tried to convince the international community that Copernicus was actually German. It is hard to argue about it now also because he wrote all his works in Latin in which he was equally fluent as in Polish and German. He has certainly supported the King of Poland in the war against the Teutonic Knights who were mainly Germans. The pedestal of the monument bears a Latin inscription drawn up by Alexander von Humboldt: "Nicolaus Copernicus Thorunensis, terrae motor, solis caelique stator" ("Nicolaus Copernicus of Thorun, mover of the earth, stopper of the sun and heavens"). Copernicus studied at the same university as myself, exactly 500 years earlier.
