Pavilion of Knowledge (of the Seas)

This new space, promoting science and technology, is located in the building that, during the 132 days of EXPO 98, was home to one of the most emblematic theme pavilions, The Pavilion of Knowledge of the Seas.

This was in fact one of the most popular pavilions in EXPO'98 with a total of 2,543,914 visitors. The Pavilion itself was designed by J.L. Carrilho da Graça and the exhibition conceived by ARX Portugal.

Its new mission, along with the other centres in Parque das Nações that attract thousands of visitors daily, is to be a centre of interest and attraction as well as a competent partner.

International Architecture Award

The design of the Pavilion of Knowledge - Ciência Viva won the architect , José Luís Carrilho da Graça, the Grand Prize of the FAD 1999 Jury in Barcelona. The 14 nominations in the Architecture category of this competition were noted for their basic, very often minimalist design, true to the rationalist tradition of architecture that is much appreciated in Catalonia. The jury felt that it represented a moment of emotion, in a context that combined simplicity and complexity to create an architectural structure of the highest quality.

The Prize was awarded to an emblematic building representative of the architectural change that took place in Lisbon with EXPO'98.
