Photographer's Note
This is a moment of the Religious Cruise that is now taking place along the Tagus River. Several decorated boats follow the image of Our Lady of the Avieiros and of the Tagus along the river, a journey of around 200 kms and many stops on the villages situated on the banks, to salute the Avieiros. The Avieiros, called this way because most part of them came from Vieira de Leiria, were fishermen who were forced to leave their homes along the coast and settled along the Tagus river because this river was safe and here they could fish the whole year, something that was impossible on the coast, where they had to spend many winter days without fishing . This migration happened in the 19th and 20th centuries, when they settled in little villages of humble wooden houses on stilts along the Tagus river. Today it’s still possible to find several of these villages and several entities are trying hard to preserve this unique culture of the Avieiros, who were called “the gypsies of the river” by Alves Redol, a Portuguese writer who wrote about them. Most part of the original houses have already disappeared because of the materials used in the construction and most part of the ones we can find in these villages are now a little different, but these villages and this culture are really interesting.

Hello Ana,
From the thumbnail, I thought this was a person in a Scottish kilt. It was most interesting to read your notes and learn the truth.
I really like this close crop. We feel to be part of the scene, sharing the view and soaking in the mood of the moment.
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hello Ana,
A nice photo with fine colours and interesting details, plus an interesting background described in the note. The woman is well placed and balances the statue of the madonna very nicely.
Kind regards,

Ola Ana
Great composition and fine colours on this traditonal scene of living folklore. The Portuguese flags are a good extra, but what I like most is the seeming interaction between the waving madonna and the lady up front. (What I like least is that bit of the man visible between these two central characters in the shot.) Excellent documentary-type shot with lots of 'couleur locale'.
Thumbs up from me.
Cheers

Bonjour Ana,
Il y a presque toujours une parade en quelque part au Portugal où la religion prend encore beaucoup d'espace. Les célébrations sont belles et colorées. Très beau cadrage vertical au centre de l'action.

Ola Ana,
A religious procession and flotilla beautifully colored with flags, paper-decorations and flowers.
A fairly good perspective with the young lady on side, you probably taken this through the crowed...

Hi Ana,
Your chosen angle makes this shot special. The woman in festive clothes and the boat gets equal share on the frame. Flags and flowers add colour nicely.

Hello Ana,
I like this picture very much, it describes the scene and its mood wonderfully in a tight, vertical frame, it contains only essential elements and the colours are very lovely. I like the dynamism of the perspective and the balance within the frame. You achieved superb clarity and contrasts. There is a nostalgic feel, it reminds me of Time-Life photos from many decades ago. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a good night,
Ourania

Olá Ana,
chega a lembrar o Ciro de Nazaré, que ocorre em Belém do Pará, e sua composição aqui ficou perfeita. Belo trabalho.
