Photographer's Note

I'm posting another photo of this event that takes place on Saint Anthony's day, not far from Mangualde, near Viseu. There's a very old feast that takes place there, near a small church devoted to S. António dos Cabaços. On this day, in the morning, most part of the shepherds in the area bring their goats and sheep for the celebrations. The tradition started because the shepherds moved their flocks from the Estrela Mountain to Montemuro Mountain, where there was more and greener pasture during the hot season and this was a place where they used to stop when they were on their way.
Early in the morning, there's a procession and an outdoor mass. Then, the flocks come and they are kept in the shadow under the trees, as it's usually hot. At around 04.00 or 05.00 in the afternoon, when it's getting cooler for them, each one of the shepherds brings them to near the chapel. They start from the right side of the chapel and they go around it a few times, always with the shepherd in front, leading them. This way the sheperds are thanking the saint for the protection their animals have received during the last year and they also ask for protection for the next year. After that, they are taken home. On this day, the fields around the church are full of locals who come to make picnics and watch the celebrations. Some of the animals are decorated.

Cela fait assez drôle de voir ces chèvres affublées ainsi d'un petit bonnet qui veut certainement dire quelque chose dans ces circonstances. Elles peuvent bien s'amuser un peu elles aussi.

I love the colourful decorations on the goats. Good sharpness & excellent use of a shallow dof. The expression on the goat's face suggests indifference. Tfs!

curioso detalhe da decoração dos carneiros. o bicho até parece estar posando para a câmera. mais uma curiosa festa de devoção popular que me surpreende pois pastores são raros na europa hoje em dia.
