Time for Transhumance - XIII, a photo from Guarda, North

Photographer's Note

Once again, I joined the shepherds and followed the route of transhumance, leading around 1000 sheep and goats (just in this group here) from Seia to Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain in Portugal, where they are going to spend the summer, because it's not so hot and they have better pastures. I 've already forgotten about the heat and the dust, it was an amazing experience to be among so many animals and to have the chance to talk with the shephers and listen to their stories.

Hello Ana, a very atmospheric picture with a fabulous light highlighting the rounded backs of the sheep and goats.
The horns make an interesting contrasting shape!
The dust adds to the overall effect.

This is a fascinating photo with a fantastic light. The lens has packed the animals tightly together, squeezed into the fairly narrow area between the trees. The composition has a nice structure too, basically consisting of four triangles (animals, air and the trees on both sides).

I never realized that walking with a shepherd could give you the opportunity for such photogenic situations. But it takes also a great observation ability of the photographer and excellent skills.

The lighting is beautiful in this photo. The frame packed with animals, along with some greenery on the sides, create a fascinating POV and composition. Were you at the end of the herd, or were there more animals behind you? It would be a bit nerve-racking to be completely surrounded by these animals, even if they were under control. :-)

Hello Ana,
You used the backlight really wonderfully here. I like the repetitive effect of all the sheep in between the green sides. The light touches the animals really beautifully.

You can strike gold with right ingredients - and that's delightful back lighting effect achieved that I always love to shoot. It's technically well done without burnt out highlights which is so competently exposed with fine definition throughout clinched by gorgeous contrast. Indeed a fine shot with mood....

I have really enjoyed looking at these photographs and sharing your experience with the shepherds.
Did you have an interpreter or could you speak Portuguese?
For me, this is the perfect shot. it conjures up images of the huge task of moving so many animals and the dust confirms the conditions!
I love the hint of sunlight on their backs.
