Time for Transhumance - XX, a photo from Guarda, North

Photographer's Note

Once again, I joined the shepherds and followed the route of transhumance, leading around 1000 sheep and goats from Seia to Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain in Portugal, where they are going to spend the summer, because it's not so hot and they have better pastures. I 've already forgotten about the heat and the dust, it was an amazing experience to be among so many animals and to have the chance to talk with the shephers and listen to their stories.

Hello Ana,
This is a wonderful photo. It's very straightforward and tells the story of the transhumance better than most in this series. I love the view of the dog walking ahead and the four shepherds side by side in fromt of the herd, each one holding a walking stick. The steep forested hillside, partly obscured by the dust from the herd, makes a perfect background. Light, colors, sharpness are all perfect.

Very atmospheric with all the dust stirred up by the feet of the sheep and goats.
I like that the four men are taking no notice of you at all, so natural.

Quelle belle série sur la transhumance. Un beau quatuor de bergers suit le chien guide qui ressemble à un patron. Une belle poussière recouvre la route et est spectaculaire pour la photo.

The dog leads, the shepherds follow, followed by the sheep.

Not the usual sequence that we used to see.
