And this is a Serra da Estrela, a breed of shepherd dogs original from this region and probably one of the oldest breeds in the Iberian Peninsula. These dogs can be really sweet, intelligent, loyal and able to face the climate of this region. They can also be great guards. This is usually the breed chosen by the shepherds of the mountain because they have the suitable characteristics and because they are prepared to face the rough climate of the mountain.

Once again, I joined the shepherds and followed the route of transhumance, leading around 1000 sheep and goats from Seia to Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain in Portugal, where they are going to spend the summer, because it's not so hot and they have better pastures. I 've already forgotten about the heat and the dust, it was an amazing experience to be among so many animals and to have the chance to talk with the shephers and listen to their stories.

Beautiful close-up portrait of the dog. A shepherds dog that to my best estimates it is about 3 to 4 years old, its teeth are fully grown now. His eyes watching something in the distance - maybe looking for a stray goat.
Frankly, never saw such a dog in real, only a similar German- shepherd.

Hello Ana,
This is a really lovely portrait of a high technical and artistic quality. These dogs have to be intelligent and loyal for the job they are doing, but I would be scared to meet one unannounced as an outsider. Being great guards could make them aggressive to strangers, I fear.

Oh I just had to take a closer look at this one.
My heart melts for this guy. My dog passed away a few years ago and he looked almost EXACTLY like this dog.

i like how his fur is a bit matted around the ears, and his teeth are so white, a true sign of a healthy dog.
I get the feeling this guy isn't going to get bored, he'll be worked hard and he'll enjoy the activity.
