Photographer's Note

I'm posting another photo of this event that takes place on Saint Anthony's day, not far from Mangualde, near Viseu. There's a very old feast that takes place there, near a small church devoted to S. António dos Cabaços. On this day, in the morning, most part of the shepherds in the area bring their goats and sheep for the celebrations. The tradition started because the shepherds moved their flocks from the Estrela Mountain to Montemuro Mountain, where there was more and greener pasture during the hot season and this was a place where they used to stop when they were on their way.
Early in the morning, there's a procession and an outdoor mass. Then, the flocks come and they are kept in the shadow under the trees, as it's usually hot. At around 04.00 or 05.00 in the afternoon, when it's getting cooler for them, each one of the shepherds brings them to near the chapel. They start from the right side of the chapel and they go around it a few times, always with the shepherd in front, leading them. This way the sheperds are thanking the saint for the protection their animals have received during the last year and they also ask for protection for the next year. After that, they are taken home. On this day, the fields around the church are full of locals who come to make picnics and watch the celebrations. Some of the animals are decorated.

This is the procession, that takes place in the morning, after the mass.

An interesting photo of this procession walking through the fields. Especially the red colours stand out very nicely against the natural, green tones of the background.

Hello Ana,
If it weren't for the modern clothes I would feel being taken back in time with this photo. This is a kind of sight never seen in my highly secular Protestant country. It is a bright and quite fascinating procession, spotted in a perfect place where the road bends in a beautiful green area. It's a photo full of details and fine contrasts of colours.

This is almost journalistic in its subject.
It is so much a tradition and I hope that over the years it continues.
Celebrations, like this, bind together a community and their history.

Your photograph is pertinent.
It shows the procession, the costumes and the infers the religious significance.

Usually we see processions in towns or in villages and not so often in natural surroundings.
