The blessing... II, a photo from Portalegre, South

Another photo of the same event. The "Blessing of the Animals" is a very ancient tradition that takes place every year, in May, in a small village of the Alentejo. On this day, usually a Saturday, most part of the inhabitants, adults and children, bring their animals to be blessed by the priest. Early in the morning there's a mass in the Parish Church, where people gather, and then people go on a procession to the fields, where the blessing takes place.
The children take their little pets: bunnies, chicks, kitten, birds or dogs to be blessed (I guess I even saw a Vietnamese pig there) and the adults take sheep, horses, cows.... It's surely one of the most interesting events I saw in the region lately.

It's quite joyfull -one can see it on the faces of the kids- but most probably also dangerous.

A superb picture captured during the fest . Children seem to enjoy the trip .
I suppose that this was a way of transportation quite common in Portugal many years ago ; but more and more rare nowadays .

Molto belli anche i tronchi di queste querce, è stata asportata la corteccia per il sughero e i tronchi sono rimasti molto scuri.

What a pretty bullock cart and the impressive animal at work which is always a joy to view as they all look so highly spirited for the occasion. Bags of peaceful atmosphere in such a lovely green setting taken from a good point of view. Very appealing indeed and certainly a timeless capture something we might have seen in National Geographic magazine. A fine shot, Congrats

Hello Ana,
The children seem to have a lot of fun but the man next to the cart must apparently intervene for something.
A wonderful scene taken in beautiful natural surroundings.
I remember long time ago somewhere in Belgium there was a blessing of horses. But so far I've never heard of blessings of other animals. Funny to hear about the birds and the Vietnamese pig.

I enjoyed your previous photograph and this is a pleasing extension of the festival. I love the co-operation between the different age groups and how well you have captured their enjoyment.

Um agradável passeio pelo campo, com um clima bem rural, com tanto verde e muito bem capturado aqui nesta belíssima foto! A diversão das crianças é evidente na imagem, e os detalhes do carro de boi estão mostrados com excelente nitidez! Lindo trabalho!

Delightful image: I particularly like the laughing girl on the cart: she brings so much life to the photograph. The diagonal line of the hill is good too, though it looks as though the two men are struggling a bit to keep control. Interesting note too. Glad you're back posting: I guess I'll start again as well...
