Most important chapter in the biography of the National Library of Romania may be considered in 1955 when it was founded (by HCM no. 1193 / 25.06.1955) State Central Library, the country's main public library, an institution created on a modern library, with specific tasks of national libraries, according to UNESCO standards.

According to most historians and researchers, the National Library of Romania has its origins in one of the oldest and representative libraries in Romania - St. Sava College Library in Bucharest. It opened its collections to the public in 1838, when they were cataloged about 1,000 volumes of French books. After unification in 1859, it obtained the status of national library, the first alternative as the National Library and Central Library. In 1864, government regulations by law, is called the State Central Library, name and status held until 1901, when it is dissolved and its collections are transferred to Romanian Academy Library receives national library status. For this time only a single function can be considered relevant national library, namely, the position property. In 1955 the book is set up new libraries - Central State Library, the main public library in Romania.

Immediately after the collapse of communism in early January 1990, the State Central Library became the National Library of Romania, following a decision by the new power, and after Romania's European Union shall develop the functions, being actively involved in many projects national and international TELplus, Manuscriptorium, rediscover etc.
