Photographer's Note

I especially like this photo because of the sincerity of her smile, and how natural it looks to me.

The photo is taken in the small village of Biertan. This is a nice small medieval city, built around the old archiepiscopy castle of Biertan. It is a castle in the UNESCO patrimony. The area is famous because here were brought the Sasi people - german nationality - by the Austro-Hungarian empire to mix the local people with german people, so they have more control at this east-end of their empire. The area is located at the edge of the Carpathians mountains - the Carpathians were the border between Europe and the Otoman (Turk) empire. The Romanian teritory was the battlefield between West and East powers, and it was occupied many centuries.

After the second World War I think they left their houses and everything and went in Germany, Austria etc. Basically, it was an abandoned space - and now you can see a very divers culturality - the romanians, the sasi, and the gipsies. Many gipsies took over the abandoned houses.

Now, many work in Germany - especially the youngsters, who send back their parents money - it's a pretty decent living area.
